- Hello everybody,
-
- I was trying to use a Conner 40MB IDE-Harddisk (V2.25) with the Oktagon 2008
- AT-IDE controller and encountered some problems. The HD will be recognized
- by my system, but with the wrong number of tracks. As long as I do not
- change this to the correct settings that I have got from the data-sheet I am
- unable to format the disk. But even when correctly set, only the first 800
- or so tracks of 977 ar accessible without a r/w-error and a halt of the
- oktagon.device. If I partitionate these and format them, everything works
- fine (incl. verify) until I try to copy some data on it, what will after the
- first KB immediately lead to errors. I tried out all possible
- jumper-settings but none of these lead to any positiv results. The HD is
- faultlessly working on different AT-IDE-Cards on the PC but on my A4000,
- the internal IDE-contr. will refuse to write any data on the disk with
- "Error -1" in hdtoolbox.
-
- The people at consumer-service for the Oktagon meant, that I should forget
- any HDs that won't work on the A4000, so I have not much hope, but perhaps
- there is anyone out there with similar experiences, who could help me.
-
-
- The second problem may be less complicated to solve and arises, when I try
- to use a Seagate st3144 Rev1 124MB HD-IDE-Drive on the Oktagon, which works
- perfectly well in my A4000 (in fact it was the built-in drive, when I bought
- the computer).
-
- The Oktagon-controller will correctly write to and load from this drive, as
- soon as it has been correctly recognized. But the problem arises at
- bootup-time, when the controller is initialized. After that it starts
- accessing the connected drive and doesn't recognise it immediately, as with
- the Conner-HD, but causes it, after the drive has started to spin and make
- some internal initalisations (I think), to violently click (4 times in my
- A4000 and 10 times in my A2000). When these IDE-bus-resets (at least I think
- it is something like that) are over, the drive seems to initialize normally,
- but the system has "booted away" long since and no partitions are found.
- This is always the case on my A2000 but on the A4000, where several other
- hardware (esp. the internal controller with another Seagate124) is connected
- and initialized at boot-up time, the drive is sometimes correctly bound into
- the system and starts without any clicking whatsoever. Up to now, I couldn't
- find any regularities in the occurrence of this correct boots, but they
- happen after each 6th-30th reset and preferably after a cold-reboot.
-
- I would speculate, that in these cases, the controller is prevented from
- resetting the IDE-bus long enough to recognize the drive and after that, the
- booting-process will continue without problems.
-
- I think, there should be a possibility to correct this strange behavior, but
- I haven't sufficient knowledge to do so on my own. So I would like to ask
- everybody, who could help me with this problem or has any ideas, to do so or
- mail them to me. (Preferably via PM, because I won't be able to check csa.*
- in the next three weeks very often.)
-
- My thanks in advance.
-
- Bye,
-
- XH
-
-
- P.S.: Ooops is it "controller" or "controler"? Sorry, my English is getting
- worse day by day :).
